The Route 72 causeway from Manahawkin into Ship Bottom is the only road onto or off the island, so summer weekends can back up. Once you're on, Long Beach Blvd. runs all 18 miles from Barnegat Light to Holgate.

Know before you go
One road on and off
Route 72 over the causeway is the only road onto or off Long Beach Island. Leave extra time on summer weekends.
Beach badges by town
Each LBI town sells its own badges, required in summer for ages 12 and up (13 in Ship Bottom). 2026 seasonal badges were $50 ($55 in Surf City), or $40–$45 preseason.
No tents
Tents aren't allowed on any LBI beach.
Swim at guarded beaches
Lifeguards work in season only, about mid-June through Labor Day depending on the town. Don't swim at unguarded beaches.
LBI Shuttle
Runs the length of the island on Long Beach Blvd.: in 2026, weekends through Oct. 11. $5 one way, exact fare; kids 12 and under ride free with an adult.
